Home Ice Maker Repair |
Question And Answer Category: Plumbing |

Question: |
Dear BlankHelp Team,
My husband broke our home ice maker. I wonder if there was a simple ice maker repair we can try. Here is the background. The ice maker is in our freezer, and the arm that goes up and down broke off. It seems to only be a simple wire, like part of a coat hanger, but we don't know how to repair the ice maker. It runs all the time now. Can the metal wire be inserted and fix the ice maker?
Considering the cost of an appliance repair person, we figured we can find some quick ice maker repair advice.
Thank you,
Cindy |

Our Advice and Answer: |
Hello Cindy,
We've been there. As soon as we read your letter many of us understood what was wrong with your ice maker and we wanted to share our ice maker repair ideas.
First, it sounds like one of the two points that the ice maker demand arm was on broke. It was probably the side that only held it. The side that actually controls ice making demand should be ok, since the arm only loosely sat in it.
A quick and simple ice maker repair for this situation, put the arm back in. On the control side. The wire hardly weights anything, and the arm will move up and down, and control the ice maker. Now this means that you have to check it every now and then. We figure the arm was broken from someone yanking out or in the ice tray without checking the arm. So now you need to be more vigile about checking the ice making arm. Friction seems to hold it in.
Now since that fixed 99% of the broken ice maker arms, we haven't gone further with any ice maker repair attempts. We have heard of someone drilling a small hole on the remaining fixed side and inserting the arm there, but we don't recommend that, since you might hit wiring, or send plastic into the ice maker's moving parts.
So if this simple home ice maker repair works, tell us. If not, still tell us, but you might now need to get that appliance repair person out to take a look.
Good luck,
The BlankHelp Team |
