US Patriot Act still in force?

Question And Answer Category: Politics

Question:

Dear BlankHelp Team,

I'm at a total loss. I know your site is about questions and answers related to day to day living, or do it yourself projects, but I get weird answers when I ask my question offering no help. Here is my story:

In 2006 we heard nothing but how bad the US Patriot Act was in the media, and the voice seemed to yell loudest was a Democratic candidate running against my Republican incumbent. Not liking government intrusion in my life, I saw the US Patriot Act as an illegal invasion. It seemed that the Democrat politician felt the same way. A confusion, since I thought liberals want loose limits on government power, that's why they are 'liberal' in government intrusion. However, the Republican incumbent wouldn't change the US Patriot Act and the Democrat said he would. Well it's now April, four months after the Democrat candidate took office. Many of us have heard nothing about the US Patriot Act. Why is it I get no real answers when I ask about it? Why was it in the media like crazy, and all news reports were about the Republicans keeping the US Patriot Act enforced, but now they are out, the Democratic Congress sees it as no issue. What can I do? Basically WTF?

Sincerely,

A confused citizen.

Our Advice and Answer:

Hello "Confused Citizen",

We don't want this site turned into a political bashing ground, but we will deal with the facts, and our observations.

1. The US Patriot Act was heavily in the media last year. This might be because it was an election issue, but the US Patriot Act is an important issue for us all.

2. Politicians often make mountains bout of mole hills, so to them, the US Patriot Act might not be an issue since they might not be effect by it. As in they are above the law.

3. Yes, the Democrats did take control of Congress in 2007, and the US Patriot Act was initially voted on, and extended by a Republican control Congress.

4. We have no clue about the hearts and minds of our elected offices. Many of us live in area's that we voted Republicans out, but find ourselves scratching our heads to why? The replacements seem 'silent' and 'doing nothing'. It seems that a vote for change meant a vote for doing nothing?

OK, so here our suggestions:

1. Understand that politicians say one thing and do another. This is called lying, or hypocrisy, in the real world but the Media does not hold certain politicians accountable, neither does their party.

2. Democrats won the most seats and made the biggest promises, we need to hold them accountable. Remind them that as quick as they got in, we can vote them out. Contact ALL your elected officials in the federal level, and tell them you voted them in to eliminate government intrusion, and you want the US Patriot Act removed. They can do that.

3. Watch what happens this year. If no positive changes occur, in 2008 we can get rid of those ineffective Democrats in the house. They had two years, the US Patriot Act could be eliminated in one day. Time to vote them back out.

Really wish we had the answers, but it seems that the Out going Republicans and the Incoming Democrats were the same people, just different political party affiliation. Might want to think about getting new people in to office at local levels, and helping them get up to the federal levels so we can get rid of the recent, same ol' same ol' in Congress.

Good luck, we are crossing our fingers,

The BlankHelp Team
