Question: |
Dear Blankhelp team,
Is ipecac syrup now bad? It seems it's not being mentioned to use for poisonings and inducing vomiting. Why has ipecac syrup been 'forgotten'? Should I get some ipecac syrup, or totally forget about ipecac syrup?

Our Advice and Answer: |
Dear Sandy,
It seems that ipecac syrup isn't being recommended by doctors to have in your house anymore. Even little position kits seem to omitting ipecac syrup from their supplies. We were curious, was ipecac syrup bad? Has there been something discovered about ipecac syrup that makes it dangerous now? Well we checked. It seems that after years of misuse the medical community seems that it's worse to have and use than to not use. Often people seem to think purging the contents of a stomach is the best way to eliminate any ingested poison. Some poisons have properties that burn flesh, and a second time in the esophagus only causes more damage. With a 24 hour poison control, and emergency medical services within minutes of most homes, no more ipecac syrup needed.
If you need to induce any vomiting, it should be at the instruction of a professional, like a doctor or poison control. They will walk you through ways to induce vomiting without ipecac syrup.
