Are divorce parties tacky?

Question And Answer Category: Divorce

Question:

Hello Blankhelp Team,

Are divorce parties tacky? We have a coworker that has been struggling with a long, difficult divorce. We try to support him with the problems his future ex-wife has created in the divorce process. So, do you think it is wrong to plan a divorce party?

Thank you,

Mary Sue

Our Advice and Answer:

Hello Mary Sue,

Divorce parties are a healthy way to vent steam, in our humble options. Not so much that it's something to celebrate, but the fact that after a serious failure of a life long commitment, a divorcee needs reassurance that they are not alone. We do suggest you scale this celebration to the level that your coworker is expecting. If he is sad over the separation, and when the divorce happens, it might be better that his divorce party be low key. If he is generally a very happy person, very eager to get this process over, has faced the idea of divorce with happiness and vigor, than a large party might be appropriate.

A suggestion is, get a caterer/party planner. Divorce parties are becoming more and more popular today(a said state of affairs), so some businesses are setup to help plan, stock, and execute a divorce party. Check for caterers with experience, and have fun.

So, in our humble options, a divorce party can be a great way to blow off steam, however you need to be considerate for the person who you want to have the party for. Without saying, divorces can be ugly, and very emotional.

Good luck,

tom
