Replacing Smoke Detectors. |
Question And Answer Category: Electrical |
| |
Question: |
Dear Blankhelp Team,
Can you settle a bet between me and a friend of mine. Is there a replacement schedule for smoke detectors? Just the average smoke detectors you find in your home. If there is, is there a difference between battery operated smoke detectors and wired smoked detectors? By The Way, I said no. If there was one, there would be something printed on the actual smoke detector, like an expiration date.
Thanks,
Bill |

Our Advice and Answer: |
Dear Bill,
Funny how we end up on bets over the weirdest things. Well with your bet with your friend, you loose. The guiding advice about smoke detector replacement seems to come from the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), they recommend replacing smoke detectors every 10 years (max). It seems that there is concern about electronics operating 24/7 for more than 10 years. So officially you loose, but from this knowledge, you gain the possibility of fixing a problem that might exist. Are your home's smoke detectors over 10 years in age? Be a hero, change them. ;)
OK, considering how cheap smoke detectors are, and how important they are, BlankHelp Team has taken the stand about replacing smoke detectors. Change them when warranty runs out, or per the NFPA, every 10 years, which ever is sooner. Now some cheaper models only have a few years, but the more expensive ones (only a few bucks over the cheaper models) have up to 10 year warranties. If the manufacturer only guarantees the smoke detector will work for 6 years, why wait 10?
Now you know, and we hope you can share this information with others, since smoke detectors save lives.
