Our Advice and Answer: |
Dear Mary,
Thank you for loving the site.
As for the Japanese Beetles, they are probably attracted to your healthy, beautiful roses. If you don't want to use pesticides you have only two options. Prevent damaged, and mitigate damaged to your roses by these Japanese Beetles.
Prevent Damage, means try to keep Japanese Beetles way. One way is to plant sacrificial Roses, or use a section of your roses as bait, and then spray them. This way the beetles are killed and prevented from attacking your prize roses. Another way is to use a bait trap, and keep it very far away from the Roses. Position it upwind, and keep it 'fresh'.
Now mitigating Japanese Beetle Damage. Each morning, and several times through the day, go out with a big cup of soapy water. Hold the cup under the Japanese Beetle that has landed on your Roses, and tap it. It will fall into the cup and drown. Make sure all are dead before emptying the cup.
We are sorry to hear about your Roses under attack, and wish you the best in battling these tough to get rid of, Japanese Beetles.
