Our Advice and Answer:

Dear Nancy,

"Mixed martial arts" is a combative sport. It's based on two opponents fighting, under a set of rules, using a mix of known martial art systems to best defeat their opponent. The mixed martial arts (MMA) you see today has been created to limit injury, and not allow really one martial art style from dominated the match. Since a fight can got to the ground, and strikes to the head are limited, the destructiveness of Muay Thai is limited in its use. Since there can be a 'stand up' part of the fight, the full potential of Brazilian JuJitsu is limited. So the rules are designed to force the two MMA opponents to mix and match the best features of different martial arts to best defeat their opponent.

Remember two things: First, MMA is a sport, and that although injury can happen it is limited by rules, and a refereed trained to prematurely end the matches, should it be clear that one fighter cannot win. So no further injury is needed, and the chance for death is limited. Second, MMA is a business, so it's designed to draw much fanfare, so like boxing can reach all levels of audiences, so can mixed martial arts competitions. Check out MMA, and you might find you actually like it. Especially the strategy, and hard work that goes into a few rounds.

We are not MMA experts, so this is our observations, but we are MMA fans.
