Question: |
Dear Blankhelp Team,
I was told that my washing machine hoses could leak and flood my basement. Is there a way that I can prevent this. I mean my washing machine hoses look good, only about 10 years old. So will replacement washing machine hoses need to happen? What to you recommend? Is there such a thing as leakproof washing machine hoses?
Thank you,
Mike

Our Advice and Answer: |
Dear Mike,
First let me tell you, we've never heard of "leakproof washing machine hoses". Maybe this is a marketing term, but things fail. The idea is that washing machine hoses fail with time, and you want to minimize the chance of failure or the amount of damage created by their failure.
Regular rubber washing machine hoses are OK, however, it is recommended they are replaced every 5 years. So it sounds like your hoses are in the need of replacement.
If a washing machine hose fails, it could fail very badly. I quick nick can lead to a leak, a leak could lead to the hoses internals unraveling, and bursting. Imagine a washing machine hookup disconnected, and turned on full blast into your basement, or laundry area. Now imagine your away for the weekend. Now it seems that a few bucks more, and purchasing wire reinforced anti-burst washing machine hoses seem very cheap compared to the clean up costs of a major flood. The anti-burst models keep the hose from unraveling, the wire mesh also helps to prevent the hose from becoming nicked. Better a small leak than a large flood.
So in conclusion, replace your hoses, and replace them with anti-burst washing machine hoses. Other steps you can take is only leaving the supply valves open when using the washing machine, but this quickly gets forgotten. If you have the money, a plumber can install auto valves that remain open only when the washing machine is in use, but in the mean time, good anti-burst washing machine hoses are a quick DIY solution.
Good luck with your new project,
The BlankHelp Team |
