| Dear Blankhelp team, I have this set of cats entering my yard and stinking up my garden. I don't want my garden to be a stray cat hangout. My neighbor having the same problem recommended I look into a scarecrow motion activated sprinkler. Well he wants me to check it out, before he buys himself a scarecrow motion activated sprinkler too. So, what is a Scarecrow Sprinkler? How does one work, and are they worth the money? | Dear Jill, A scarecrow motion activated sprinkler, is basicly a garden sprinkler with a motion detector built in. It remains off till an animal crosses it's field of vision, and then turns on. Being a reaction based sprinkler, it makes a fair amount of noise and even if the animal isn't hit with water, the sound will make the animal determine the scarecrow motion activated sprinkler guarded area is undesirable. Some points: 1. The scarecrow sprinkler will not distinguish between a cat, dog, or large bird. Even if you walk in its field of vision it will turn on. So use your scarecrow sprinkler, to protect areas not normally used by people or pets, or figure a way to make it easy to turn on and off your scarecrow sprinkler. 2. The scarecrow motion activated sprinkler only stays on for a short period of time, so not much water is wasted. We've seen some advertised saying they only use a few cups. The noise, and startling of the animal seems to be the way they work best. 3. The scarecrow motion activated sprinkler will need a source of water, so make sure it has a hose to reach it. 4. The scarecrow sprinkler will need batteries to power its motion activated sensor. 5. Since it uses water, you want to protect the scarecrow motion activated sprinkler from freezing. In the winter months your gardening activity should decline, and the protectiveness of your garden should do so too. So do not try and used any garden hoses(drain them) or a scarecrow sprinkler in freezing temperatures. 6. Read and understand the manufactures instructions. A scarecrow motion activated sprinkler can be a very human way to deter unwanted animal invasions, but you need to follow all directions.
