Why so much homework? Too Much Homework?

Question And Answer Category: General Homework

Question:

Dear BlankHelp Team,

My daughter seems to come home with so much homework. Is she doing something wrong, or is this just how things are today?

Our Advice and Answer:

Dear Concerned-Mom,

We cannot peer into your situation, this is a concern you need to bring up with the teacher and the administration.

All we can offer is our observations of the public school systems. There is so much non-essential, essential meaning required life-skills like reading, writing, and math, that many core topics are pushed off. The conflict is that these core topics are important; so children have to do the work, and if it's not covered enough in class, the child is left with mounds of homework to make up for what is missed. Add on top, that many schools have policies for x-amount of homework per topic, per hour it is covered in school, the non-essential homework has to be added to your child's over-loaded homework schedule.

One thing we can say, if your child takes anything from her lessons from school, busy work is just that, to keep you busy. Hopefully your child will become results oriented, and that will make her unique from the rest of the children later in life. "Don't just work for the sake of working, work to succeed at something."

Good luck,

The BlankHelp Team.
