Catalytic converter heat shield loose, will removing catalytic converter help? |
Question And Answer Category: Car |

Question: |
Dear Blanhelp team,
I have a loose set of catalytic converter heat shields, the noise is terrible.
At first I pulled the bottom heat shield away from the catalytic converter, that worked, the parts that rubbed were silenced. The the top heat shield came loose. So I pulled that heat shield away from the catalytic converter, but soon dropped back into place. Once again noisy. So I went to a exhaust place, they welded the shields back in place, for a few bucks. It was quiet for a while, but then it failed. The new welds failed. Tried wires, bending, and the catalytic converter's heat shields fail again.
I don't have the money to replace the catalytic converter, so I thought about removing the catalytic converter. Is this OK?

Our Advice and Answer: |
Hello Half-Deaf,
Sorry to hear about the problems with your catalytic converter. However don't feel you are alone. One team member has recently gone through the same problems too. The Catalytic Converter still functions for emission control, but the heat shields came loose.
So first, Stop! Removing your Catalytic Converter is potentially damaging to your car's engine, and could potentially harm the environment. In some cases, we believe altering your car's emission system could be illegal, if not just plain extreme.
If your car is in warranty: Take the car back to the dealer. Many cars have a emissions system warranty that far extends past the cars original warranty. This way you can get professional advice, and help.
Now for a noisy team members car, which was outside of warranty: After much experimenting this is what we found, by using hose clamps you can tighten up the heat shields enough they do not bang around and rattle. We found that the 6" hose clamps worked on a Honda CR-V's Catalytic converter heat shields, our team member's car. We got the clamps tight enough that they don't move, but not so tight they loose that air clearance needed for the heat shields to properly function.
Now remember, if you are at all uncomfortable with working safely under your car, then have someone who is make the fix. This will not alter your car's emissions system, so no car state inspector should complain, but be sure to be honest about the 'fix' should you be asked.
We hope we helped, and regardless of the cost to fix this problem, it's cheaper than loosing your sanity. ;)
Good luck,
The BlankHelp Team |
