Will a home inspection service help conserve energy?

Question And Answer Category: Home Energy Savings

Question:

Dear Blankhelp,

I was wondering how to save money, and thought not paying high utility bills could help. Do I need to get in contact with home inspection services to help?

What can you suggest?

Tony

Our Advice and Answer:

Dear Tony,

We are glad you want to save money. Especially with energy, it's very practical locally in your wallet, and globally for all of us.

Before you spend any money on any inspection service, we suggest you take a minute to make changes to your habits. If you aren't already energy minded you can try the following:

1. Turn off lights leaving a room empty.
2. Turn off the TV when not watching it.
3. Don't leave the refrigerator open for long periods of time. Open get what you want, then close.
4. Turn your heat down a few degrees, might find it still comfortable at a degree or two lower on the thermostat.

These are some suggestions we would take before having to spend, or wait for any type of inspection. Now back to the topic of inspections. A typical home inspection service will check the condition of your home. Not the energy efficiency of it. So you need to have an Energy Audit. These Energy Audits are becoming more popular, and readily available thought your local utilities. These are some things you should expect from your Energy Audit, home improvement ideas, recommendations for old appliance replacements, and tips on how you can save energy. Rather than go into details that might not cover your type of home, give your local utility a call and ask for a home energy audit. You might find them free, and quick.

Good luck with saving energy and money.
