New cause of global warming?

Question And Answer Category: Science

Question:

Dear Blankhelp Team,

I have an assignment for my science class that addresses Global Warming. We, our team is 1/2 of the class, aren't trying to determine if it is happening or not, just what is causing it. The other half is determining why it's not happening. In our discussions somethings came up, our teach stated that when we think "Global" we are very hemisphere centric. Meaning we often don't address changes south of the Equator. Is it true that it's actually getting colder south of the equator? Something about Antarctica getting bigger?

If so why?

Thank you,

Sue

Our Advice and Answer:

Dear Sue,

Very good questions. We first thought we weren't at all qualified in sharing our ideas with you, since none of us are Meteorologists. However, in our observations of news, documentaries, etc, etc, you can have 2000 experts in a room, and you will get 2000 different stories. So we would like to share our ideas now.

Given from news reports:

1. The media/experts claim the Arctic Ice is melting.

2. The Atlantic, charts often only show between the US and Europe, might have warmed up a degree.

Now the stuff we found but wasn't covered.

1. The Northern Hemisphere has the majority of land masses, so it accumulates the most in solar energy, therefore it's typically warmer.

2. Heat energy is received from the Sun, but it's distributed thought convection of water and air. This explains why the North and South Poles aren't subjected to the cold of space with 6 months of no Sun.

3. Antarctica's Ice sheet grows each year. Meaning it gets thinker, causing many research stations there to have to deal with 'growing' with the ice sheet, or become abandoned into the ice.

OK, with this information, North is warmer and South is cooler, as evident by the behaviors of the Ice sheets. What is happening? If the world was 'OK' 30+ years ago(based on the previous theory we were heading into an ice age in the 70's), what caused it to reverse? OK, so what is wrong?

Well it seems that the hot and cold aren't mixing. It seems that simple right? So if more energy left the northern hemisphere, it would cool down, preventing ice sheets from melting. If the southern hemisphere received more energy, maybe the growth of Antarctica's ice will slow down. So how is energy being "NOT" transferred? We found the possible answer, very radical, but it would explain our observations. Windmills.

Windmills have grown in popularity due to oil crisis of the mid 70's. Remember before 1980, we were in a predicted cooling cycle into an ice age. Windmills take wind energy and convert it to electricity. So if the wind is slowed down, what happens to the Earth's natural convection? It slows down. So now we get localized hot spots, the Northern Hemisphere, and localized cooling, the Southern Hemisphere. So it seems that in our quest for energy, we have created a real monster that Don Quixote would agree with, windmills rob the Earth of it's wind energy that keeps the everything normal.

Sue, we aren't experts, but rather than chasing White Rabbits, we only want to address the facts, and then come to our own conclusions. So you might want to introduce in your class how the Earth is unbalanced due to the prevention of the even distribution of Solar energy, due to the increase in Windmill usage. We wish you luck, and who knows, we might be on something and finally you can be a part of the solution, not the panic. ;)

Good luck with your class project,

The BlankHelp Team
