Question And Answer Category: Website

Question:

Dear BlankHelp Team,

I have a site, but it it is on one of those freebie web site hosting services with a really long url. I want to register a domain name, but wondered how to go about it.

So where should I register a domain name for my web site?

Thank you,

Bill

Our Advice and Answer:

Hello Bill,

We are glad you are venturing out into creating a very unique web site, and want to register your own unique domain name.

First, to register a domain name you will need a domain registrar's services.

To simply what a Domain Registrar's purpose, it is like a large recognized name server. Meaning this, if a person enters your domain name into a browser, your browser asks where is this domain's web site. So the name serves basically says, it's hosted there(pointing to your host). Once your browser communicates with your hosting provider, they too have an internal name server that then redirects your browser to their file system (disk and directory) where your web site files are. Very simple explanation to help explain why you need a good domain registrar's services.

When looking at a domain registrar to register a domain name, we look at a couple things:

1. Are they ICANN registered/certified? (If the registrar messes up, ICANN can help you.)
2. Their reputation.
3. Cost.
4. Ease of use.

We have to say we have experience with three domain registrar's.

Go Daddy, Dotster, and 1 And 1.

We originally used Dotster for all our domain registering, but as we grew in our collection of domain names, we saw a fair amount of savings moving to a cheaper domain registrar. So if you have only a few domains, Dotster might be the way to go.

Our second domain registrar was Go Daddy. We quickly found out that Go Daddy wasn't very friendly to us. We were accused as spamming, and had to fight to prove we were innocent. If we couldn't, Go Daddy would seize our domains if we did not pay a $200 administration fee per domain. We quickly learned from Go Daddy's emails, they do not 'define' spam, so this made it easy to be accused of it, and difficult to prove yourself innocent. So we had to find another domain registrar.

Our final choice is "1 And 1". They are cheaper than Go Daddy with no special offers, and so far have been extremely friendly. One plus we see, that others considered negative, 1 And 1 require more documentation to transfer your domains to another owner, or registrar. Considering the horror stories we've heard of stolen domains, "1 And 1" are proactive in protecting us.

Second to register a domain name, you need to follow the steps outlined by your domain registrar. Now each domain registrar is different, but the basics are like this.
1. Create an account.
2. Select an available domain name.
3. Pay for domain name being registered for some time period.
4. Setup your domain names information. Example, where you are going to host the web site.

Now there seems be a lot of information here, but it is quite simple. Once you pick a domain registrar, hopefully you will see how easy it is. Get one site up, and soon you'll want to put up more information on the web. We wish you luck, and if you have anymore questions, please feel free to contact us again.

Sincerely,

The BlankHelp Team
