Question: |
Dear BlankHelp Team,
I've tried many ways to quit smoking, but none seem to work. Filters, patches, hypnosis, etc.
What is the best way to quit smoking?
Thank you, love the site,

Our Advice and Answer: |
Hello John,
Thank you for the compliment about the site.
OK, now to your question. We have a former 8+ year chain smoker on our team. He smoked Kools, New Ports, and Marlboros(to get free stuff). The max he smoked was 4+ packs a day, and minimum a pack a day. He has been clean( a nonsmoker again) for 12+ years now.
Here is what he tried:
- Filters, Venturi, and Media. Failed. - Nicotine Patch (under doctors control). Got sick, and actually made him want to smoke more. - Self-hypnosis. Feel asleep and still failed. - Gum. Failed. - Cigars. WTF? you ask. Yes ended up doubling his smoking habit. - Chewing Tobacco. Failed, he ended up chewing and smoking at the same time. - etc, etc, etc...
Why did these ways to quit smoking failed? He said, "Because I didn't want to quit". Not necessary smoking, but keeping my vice. To quit smoking, he just wanted to replace it with something else. Since nothing really 'replaced' smoking, he just went back. It took a life changing event for him to make the concession decision, he had to stop. The reason he quit, hold your socks, he couldn't afford it anymore. So he went "cold-turkey". Once he decided, no. He stuck to it. We asked him today what he thought about smoking, and he admitted he liked it, but never recovered financially to pickup the habit again.
Smoking is concession decision. You choose to smoke, if you choose not to smoke, you stop. Not weaning off of smoking, or buying patches, or gimmicks. You stop. If someone said they were going to quit their job, do you think they cut back hours per day, and then stop? How about beating the wife? How about shaving off a mustache? Do you trim it, and trim it more and more over a few months till it's gone? No you shave it off. That is what you need to do. Come to the decision you want to stop smoking, and just do it. Anything other than that, you are replacing one 'fix' to another, and setting yourself up with an excuse to go back to smoking.
Best way to quit smoking, make up your mind and do it.
Good luck with your future decision,
The BlankHelp Team
