Our Advice and Answer: |
Dear Mary Sue,
Here are some general facts based on what we've observed with people quitting smoking.
1. Not everyone gains weight. 2. If you do gain weight, it's only a few pounds( 10 or less pounds).
Here are some other general facts about quitting smoking, that might lend towards weight gain: 1. Food tastes better. 2. Smoking is an appetite suppressant, so now you will be desiring to eat more.
So as you can see, it is very, very possible to gain weight with quit smoking. Here are some more general facts why you should quit smoking:
1. A few pounds weight gain, will not cancel out the positive health effects of quit smoking. 2. Smoking shortens your life, and you have 100% choice/control over NOT smoking. You have to eat.
Now let's get to what you said in your question:
- You sound like you are already overweight, so it sounds like if you have any weight issues after quitting smoking, they were there prior to quiting. So Quit.
- You sound very worried about your appearance, in our humble options, you will look better without a cigarette in your hands; without yellow fingers and teeth; and without blood shot eyes.
- Worried about what others think about you? If you quit smoking, and save some of your clothes in a bag, you'll find out in a week what others thought about your smell. We have a "born-again" nonsmokers on our team, and he is actually embarrassed about how bad he smelled the years he smoked. A smoker only tolerated the lingering odor of old smoke in their hair and clothes because it's the cost of smoking. Should smokers retain their sense of smell in-between cigarettes, we feel many more people would stop smoking.
So your question was: "Will I gain weight if I stop smoking?" Our official answer: "Who cares?" We've never heard any doctors telling patients to pick up smoking to loss weight, and we encourage you see your doctor to help you quit, and stay quit before you try.
Now we sound like we are being hard on you, but we just want to set in a little reality. You tolerated smelling terrible, looking worse than you could look, wasting money, and you are concerned about a few pounds associated with quiting smoking? Stop worrying, and quit smoking. Your lungs, heart and wallet will appreciate it. :D
Sincerely,
The BlankHelp Team
