Got this in an email, money transfer from Nigeria?

Question And Answer Category: Privacy Protection

Question:

Dear BlankHelp Team,

I got an email saying that there was money 'locked up' in Nigeria, and they need my help to do a money transfer from Nigeria. It was a very sad story, so I wonder if I should help.

Doesn't seem like I have to do much, just provide some information, and I even get a cut in the amount. Can I use Nigerian Money in the US, or do I have to convert it.

Any advice?

Martha

Our Advice and Answer:

Dear Martha,

It is a scam. Do you think for a moment, that with 275 million people in the US, One federal government (with millions of levels of bureaucracy), 50 state governments( with millions levels of bureaucracy), thousands of banks, thousands of lawyers, some largely financed 'person, company, charity, or government' of Nigeria needs you?

I recall a TV show I saw that a spokes person from the FBI pleaded with the public to stop answering requests for financial information, money, or anything from foreign people. Following up on scammed American complaints is drawing resources from fighting terrorism, finding domestic criminal, etc.

Here are some tips:

- Never give any personal information via email.

- Never talk, or make financial agreements with foreign citizens.

- Never assume, that something is too good to be true, that it ISN'T.

- Never give money to a group who claim they want to give you money(example, $100 processing fee for a million dollar lottery email).

We have heard that email scams out of some countries in Africa, account for the majority of those countries income. Also, some people angry enough to go 'get their money back' ended up dead. These are just 'rumors' we were told, but regardless, don't fall for scams that have been around for years. Even prior to the internet. Money transfer from Nigeria emails seem to be very common.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask, we aren't trying to be mean, just that you might work too hard for your money to toss it away. We want you to be safe.

Sincerely,

The BlankHelp Team
