How can I get better gas mileage? |
Question And Answer Category: Car |

Question: |
Dear BlankHelp Team,
I'm sure you have to be living in a cave to not notice gas prices. Now I can't fret too much about 3 dollar a gallon gas without beating myself up paying 2 bucks for a medium cup of capuchino. That would be hypocritical, but I enjoy capuchino, I have to buy gas regardless if I like it or not. How can I get better gas mileage, without selling my car and buying a small car to improve gas mileage?
Thank you,
Capincino-Lover |

Our Advice and Answer: |
Dear Capuchino-Lover,
Yes high gas prices have everyone down. You see the effects directly, through pump prices, but the hidden costs in everyday consumer items is hurting us too. The only ones that seem to be making a real killing at higher gas prices are our state and federal government. They make money off gasoline, and they had nothing to do with producing it. Zero Cost, 100% Profits for our burecrats. So since we could never force our elected officials to stand in public and explain why they need our money more than we do, we'll try and figure ways to improve gas mileage for your current car.
From what we've learned, either through experience or told to us by mechanics, these tips should help your car get better gas mileage, or get the best gas mileage it can get:
Better Gas Mileage Tip #1. Tune your car up. Tuning up your car to run a peck gas efficiency just makes sense. Plus, with these longer tune-up periods, they gas savings should easily make up for the cost of the tune up.
Better Gas Mileage Tip #2. Properly inflate your tires. Just like walking in sand, is harder than walking on hard concrete, your car has to burn more gas turning too-soft tires. Check your owners manual, or for tire pressure chart on your car's door, and have your tires checked, and adjusted, weekly.
Better Gas Mileage Tip #3. Convert over to a cloth air filter. Paper air filters have to use 'torturous' paths to trap dirt. The newer, reusable, filters use oil to assist in trapping dirt. Which means, they have wider holes, and lower air restriction. This means your engine can use less fuel trying to breath.
Better Gas Mileage Tip #4. Don't drive your car. This seems weird, but what we mean is, sometimes we are inspired to use our cars for short trips, anytime we want. Since these short trips burn lots of gas, warming up the engine, wait till you have several trips to run, than take a drive combining all your tasks into one trip.
Better Gas Mileage Tip #5. Drive more efficiently. Don't accelerate too fast, don't brake too hard. Make smooth speed changes.
Better Gas Mileage Tip #6. Don't Speed. The rate of fuel consumption goes up exponentionally with the increase in speed. So to save a few minute driving somewhere, you are burning way more gas for the same distance compared to driving at a normal speed.
Better Gas Mileage Tip #7. Empty the trunk. Only carry in your vehicle what you need. During the summer month, store away the snow chains and bags of sand.
Better Gas Mileage Tip #8. Avoid unneeded car idling. It takes less gasoline to start your car, than idle for a minute. So if you are waiting for a friend, turn off the engine.
Now we don't know which tip will best help, so we recommend that you do them all. At least if you don't improve your gas mileage immediately, the small savings will at up with time.
Wish you good luck with your attempts to improve gas mileage, and if you have any more questions, please ask.
