Belt Sander Troubles |
Question And Answer Category: Carpentry |

Question: |
Dear BlankHelp Team,
I'm refinishing my deck, and have a question.
Right now I'm working on using a belt sander to strip off old layers of wood and sealants from my deck boards. I seem to be going through sanding belts fast. Any tips on helping sanding belts last?
thanks,
Do-It-MySelf-Dude |

Our Advice and Answer: |
asdfHello Do-It-MySelf-Dude,
After pondering on your question, we can offer some belt sander tips. Let's assume you don't have a bunch of money just to go out and buy a bigger belt sander, plus since you didn't mention what size belt sander you have, we decided to just stick to the general advice we can offer.
Sanding creates heat, heat weakens the belts adhesives to hold on the sanding compound. If the belt gets too warm, it will freely give up it's sanding media. We recommend either taking breaks, or have several belts on hand to switch back and forth too. This allows one belt to cool off, while another is in use.
Also, don't forget to give the sander a break. There is typically a metal plate directly under the sander. Loosen the sanding belt and let this plate cool off enough to not transfer too much heat to a new belt.
hope this helps,
The BlankHelp Team
